The setting in the book is very important because it is the reason there are problems for Maniac Magee. It took place in a town that was divided into two parts, the East End and the West End. One side of town was where African Americans lived...except for Maniac Magee. This caused him problems because some people living there thought he should NOT be there, that he should be on the "white" side of town. Maniac did not understand this for a long time, but when he figured out there was hatred for him, it really upset him. It upset him so much that he ran away for an entire day and into the night.

He was teased and teased, and then a mom took him for a child along with Amanda who was his sister. Then they found out that Maniac Magee was elergic to pizza.
